Using earthen pots to cook food is the safest way, as clay pots are porous which allows for slow and even heating of food, resulting in better flavor and nutrient retention. Moreover, cooking in clay pots does not require excessive oil or fat, resulting in healthier meals and they do not contain any harmful chemicals or toxins, which makes them an ideal choice. Always remember to season the pot before using it, so soak the pot in water for a few hours before using. Since clay pots are porous, they will retain moisture, which will further prevent them from cracking. After soaking the pot, wipe it clean with a cloth, then fill it with water and place it on low flame. Let it cook for two minutes and throw away the water. Another quick way to season the pot within minutes is to use wheat flour, so add 2-3 tablespoons of wheat flour to the interior walls of the pot. Turn off the heat and wipe the pot properly with a cotton cloth.
Unlike our regular kitchen pots, clay pots are not meant for high-heat cooking, so always make sure that the flame is low-medium. Moreover, cooking on low heat will cook the food slowly and infuse those unique rustic flavors into the food.
Always clean a clay pot gently using soap and a gentle scrubber. Once clean, wipe it with a cotton cloth, or alternatively air-dry the clay pot (place it in sunlight). Drying the clay pot in sunlight is the best way to remove moisture from it. Wrap the clay pot in a cotton cloth and store it.
Using a metal ladle to stir the food in the clay pot can damage its interiors. For clay pots, a wooden or a silicone ladle is the best pick. They can bear high temperatures and won’t leave any marks on the surface of clay pots.
